Evolution Space is an American private spaceflight and aerospace company that specializes in solid propulsion systems and small launch vehicles. Founded in December 2018 by Steve Heller and Riley Meik under the initial brand name Sugarhouse Aerospace, the company is currently headquartered in Mojave, California with satellite offices in Washington, DC, Zion, Illinois, and NASA Stennis Space Center, Mississippi.
In 2021, the company rebranded to its current name, Evolution Space, under the leadership of CEO and founder Steve Heller. Evolution Space’s mission is to provide low-cost access to space and suborbital launch with commercial solid propulsion systems that are simpler, safer, more easily mass-produced, and quickly tailored to specific customer needs.

In November 2021, Evolution Space conducted its first full-scale solid-propellant rocket mission, Too Busy Chasing Stars, reaching a max altitude of 188,444 feet at Mach 3.95. This successful test flight validated the company’s propulsion technology and demonstrated its ability to develop reliable and high-performance rocket systems.
On April 22, 2023, Evolution Space completed its first space mission, Gold Chain Cowboy, with the rocket reaching an apogee of 408,456 feet (124.5 km), 24.5 km past the Kármán line, at Mach 5.2. This historic achievement made Evolution Space the 9th privately funded US company to reach space, joining the ranks of pioneering firms like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic. The mission showcased the company’s rapid progress in developing advanced launch capabilities.
In May 2023, Evolution Space conducted its first commercial spaceflight partnership as a propulsion provider with The Spaceport Company, performing test launches on their floating offshore launch platform in the Gulf of Mexico. This collaboration marked the first commercial launch from US territorial waters and demonstrated Evolution Space’s ability to work with partners to enable new launch opportunities. It also highlighted the company’s versatility in adapting its propulsion systems for different mission profiles and customer requirements.
